Dr. James MacKenzie, BSc., M.D., FRCS(C)
Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. James MacKenzie
James MacKenzie, MD FRCS

A Calgary native, Dr. James MacKenzie has been an orthopedic surgeon for 20 years, focusing his practice predominantly on arthoplasty with a generous amount of pre-arthroplasty for knees. He covers trauma call for single limb type trauma care and sits on a Clinical Steering Committee for the Provincial Hip and Knee Care Plan. He was one of the first surgeons in Canada to start performing Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) and is a consultant surgeon training surgeons from all over North American on the BHR technique. He is also the Orthopedic Surgeon for the Calgary Stampeders, a position he took over from his role model, mentor and uncle, Dr. Vincent Murphy, in 1992. Dr. MacKenzie is dedicated to his profession and his patients, performing anywhere from 240 to 370 joint procedures per year, depending on operating room availability.

Dr. MacKenzie attended medical school at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and did his Orthopedic Residency in Calgary. Following completion of his residency, he was awarded a one-year fellowship in Total Joint Replacement in Iowa, under the direction of Dr. Dick Brand and Dr. Richard Johnston, one of the best hip surgeons in North America at the time. He began his career at the Holy Cross and the Rockyview Hospital, where he served a term as the Head of Orthopedics. He also served as Head of the Arthroplasty Section of the City-wide Division of Orthopedic Surgery.

Throughout his career, Dr. MacKenzie has place a high value on training, teaching residents, fellows, and medical students. He is involved in a variety of provincial working groups and is a member of the Representative Forum of the Alberta Medical Association. In Canada's publicly funded health care system, many services are rationed, with surgery being severely rationed. And as an expert in orthopedic surgery, he is keenly aware that there are too few operating rooms in Calgary, and has become more involved in increasing public awareness and discussing with administrators to address the issue.

Dr. MacKenzie is a member of the Canadian Orthopedic Association, the Canadian Association of Sport Medicine, the International Cartilage Repair Society, and an international affiliate member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

He is married to Karen, a family physician who currently does surgical assisting, and they have three children. He enjoys hiking in the mountains, bicycle riding, skiing, snowshoeing and traveling with his family.
